Boots Change. We Change. You Win.

Ortho Ski bootfitting powder turn skiing

If you’ve been skiing long enough to remember rear-entry boots or ski pants with enough static they could power a chairlift, you’ll know the snow world is never stagnant. Everything shifts—trends, terrain, tech, and yes, even our humble little bootfitting biz.

Since launching Ortho Ski back in 2015, we’ve had one foot in the ski shop and the other firmly in the science of how humans actually move. And in that time, we’ve seen ski boots change more than an après-ski playlist.

Here’s the major changes we’ve seen:

  • Weight: Lighter, faster, stronger. Modern boots are now around 30% lighter thanks to clever plastics and design tweaks. That’s like taking a bottle of wine off each foot—except no regrets in the morning.

  • Grip Walk: Remember the ice rink shuffle from car park to café? Grip Walk soles are now standard on new ski boots (except, of course, race boots), giving us actual grip underfoot and a little rocker-sole to roll across the flat. Revolutionary.

  • BOA: Once the domain of snowboarders and bikers, BOA has stomped into the ski boot scene like it owns the place. We’ve now got double BOA boots from Nordica in-store, and honestly, they’re smoother than your mate’s après chat-up lines.

  • Customisation: Back in 2015, the idea of a custom ski boot was pretty niche. Now? It’s the move for skiers who actually want to enjoy their day (wild, right?). People are realising that a great ski boot fit starts with understanding your body—not just your shoe size. Enter the ski podiatrist (that’s us guys, we started that here!)

And as the boots evolve, so do we.

This winter, we’re embracing change too. We’ve closed our Buller store (insert dramatic ski-pole mic drop here) and are doubling down on what we do best—expert custom boot fitting in Melbourne, and a refined mountain presence in Mount Beauty.

Why the change? Because we believe in doing fewer things better. By focusing on our mothership store and our alpine offshoot, we’re giving every skier more time, more expertise, and better results. Less rushed. More personalised. Just the way boot fitting should be.

So if your boots are a bit old school (read: painful), or you want to see what a ski podiatrist-led fit really feels like—come visit. We’ve got the latest tech, the best brains in the biz, and just enough cheek to keep it interesting.

Change is good. Especially when it leads to warmer toes, better turns, and no more car park slippage.
