How to ski holiday like a proper prepper

Masking up for a ski holiday

Has it been more than a year since you got to ski? Blasphemous! Let’s help you plan for this winter to make the most of every snowy opportunity.

Skiing is akin to flying and the freedom that comes with it. We all remember flying, sort of. It’s been a while now that I think of it. I mean the whole airport and masks and crowds isn’t great at the moment but flying is fantastic. You know, when we were allowed to do it. Okay… so… skiing. Skiing is great. You don’t even have to fly to ski in Australia and the season is coming and the skiing will be on.

Firstly, you all need to become preppers. This is not a trendy term by any means, but times being what they are… Check your equipment now. Does everything fit? Do you need to get that summer wax off your skis? Has the duct-tape come off your ski boots and you need to accept it’s time for new ones? Perhaps even a fancy pair fit by a podiatrist with custom-liners and boot heaters (or am I just projecting here now?)

Obviously your most important piece of equipment is your ski boots. They will make or break your skiing sesh, so ensure they fit comfortably, and if not, book in right now to get them fixed.

Tickets. We don’t know yet if the resorts will be limiting who can ride on a given day and you will need to reserve tickets again this year. My guess is that reservations will be a necessity, but not as extreme as last year. So, factor that in.

Accommodation. Book now. Pick your dates and book. I expect this season to be full of people who have not had their regular snow fix in the past year and are booking extra trips. So, book yours too.

Back-up plan. What is yours? We’re expecting the lifts to run, but maybe there will be times with special restrictions in place, like take away only. So where are you going to eat? Do like our Canadian cousins have been doing this season and bring the lodge to the car park. Got a van? Bring it. Got an RV? Perfect for lunch time warmth (wow! You own an RV? Fancy!). None of these? Bring your camp chairs and party in the car park with your hot takeaway. The food and beverage joints on the hill will be ready to adapt, so you need to be ready too!

Ask yourself the big questions now so you have a plan for all eventualities. If it snows tonight, how fast can I get to the mountains? How much does my job really mean to me? If the borders close, who can I swap jobs with? Make your plan now so there’s no time wasted on decision making in the heat of the moment.

Once you’re in the resort, no sleep ins. This is certainly the epitome of a ‘no friends on powder days’ kind of season. It’s all about first tracks because you never know if today’s last lift ride will be your last chair for the season (just kidding) (not really – frowny face).

You’ve got a fair bit to think about. Let us help you by making your boots perfect and reducing the mental-load you have to take on there. We will be in Melbourne and Sydney before the winter fixing and providing new boots. And we always have our on-mountain clinics in Falls Creek and Mt Buller for the winter revellers. Book here or give us a call.
